March 2024 – In which the Irish descend on Gloucestershire and we all enjoy a flutter

Well the close of the Six Nations saw Ireland romping home with the Championship, again 😊.  And with the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same week, when most of my fellow countrypersons seem to invade Gloucestershire, it was definitely time for 40 shades of green in the shop window.

Bourton is greening up nicely too now.  Though the rain – oh the rain, the endless rain we’ve been having – has kept the ground saturated and the grassy banks of the Windrush have been turning into a quagmire.  Hence the attractive orange ‘keep off’ tape wrapped around the grassy patches in the centre of the village this month.  It might spoil visitor’s photos but it’s doing the job of protecting new turf and new grass seedlings.

It’s been interesting to watch the height of the river Windrush, with flooding happening on other rivers in the UK, but so far it hasn’t broken its banks.

Shop trade has been quiet over the winter months, as I was warned it would be, and so it’s nice to have visitors coming back to Bourton now.  Easter school holidays and bank holidays coming up!
