February 2024 – In which the season of love comes to Bourton

Love of the Six Nations that is.

So we’re a big rugby supporting family here – sitting on both sides of the England / Ireland divide, including Son and Heir who inhabits both nationalities but is in reality 51% Irish 😉.  The Six Nations tournament is watched with baited breaths and much hallway pacing every year in my house.  So of course there’ll be a nod to all of our six nations in this month’s shop window, following on from a thoroughly pink moment for Valentine’s Day.

Bourton village is beginning to show glimpses of Spring.  The ducks are venturing into the river Windrush, the snowdrops are poking up along the river bank and the evenings are definitely getting longer when I’m shutting the shop.

I’m new to the Cotswolds myself so I’m enjoying seeing how the scenery unfolds.  I’ve lived in the UK for 30 years, all over the Midlands, but I’m venturing deeper into the Cotswolds now which is a lovely part of the world.  As I drive down the Fosse Way every shop day I can see little flashes of green appearing on trees which is heartening.  Spring is coming!

February half term has been and gone.  Having recently graduated as a parent beyond the ‘school years’ you quickly lose track of where these annual calendar markers appear, but as a shop owner I am quickly reminded when school’s out!  It’s great to see young folks (how old am I?!…) getting into crafts as there is often that old lament about crafting being a ‘dying’ art.  I’m delighted to see more teenagers picking up a hook or needles and embracing yarncrafts.  My favourite question I get asked in the shop is ‘I want to learn to crochet, where do I start…?’  Oh the joy you have ahead of you.  And the yarn addiction.

Still finding my way around running a wool shop and so I was very excited to attend my first trade show at the NEC in February, known colloquially as the ‘Stitches Show’.  It was an insight into a lot of the UK’s suppliers of yarn, fabric, haberdashery, quilting, cross stitch and needle craft.  I saw the new ranges and products that my current suppliers are launching and made a few new friends for different ranges I might want to try.  Food for thought.
