April 2024 – In which ‘Spring’ takes its sweet time…

Easter came to Bourton and while many of us ate our own body weight in Cadbury Mini Eggs (other brands are available but really why would you deviate…), Spring forgot to arrive alongside the Easter holidays.  So the rain has been relentless in the Cotswolds so far this year, and I come from a country that has 103 words for rain.

We’ve still got patches of grass along the banks of the Windrush that are protected from wet boots trampling the living daylights out of it, but still, still, beautiful Bourton is perking herself up and the cherry blossom is blooming lovely.

I’ve been able to have the shop door open again on the less wet and windy days and it’s great to feel a bit of fresh air and sunlight.  The Easter holidays did bring lots of lovely visitors to Bourton, day trippers and weekenders and those ‘doing England’ in 24 hours.  I’ve had some fascinating conversations with visitors from all over the globe.  I love it when I know that ball of Cotswold wool from my supplier’s farm down near Cirencester will be ending up in Colorado or Canberra or Cape Town. The Cotswold wool trade of medieval times it may not be but between Bourton Yarn Basket and my fellow Cotswold wool traders – Sew U Knit Crafts in Broadway and The Fibreworks in Chipping Norton – we are keeping the tradition going as best we can.  Any by customers buying Cotswold wool from us we can do our little bit to help the farmers who raise the sheep and get their fleeces spun for us all to enjoy our yarncrafts.
